Extract text from your PDF into a plain text file.
Upload a PDF, extract its text, then download it as a .txt file.
Is this tool really free?
Yes. Every tool on this site is free, with no account or sign-up required.
Are my files uploaded to your servers?
No. All processing happens in your browser, so your files never leave your device.
What if my PDF is a scanned document?
This tool extracts embedded text only. For scanned PDFs, try our PDF OCR tool.
PDF to TXT extracts the embedded text from your PDF into a plain .txt file. The text is extracted automatically. Pick a page separator if you like, then copy the text or download it as a .txt file.
The separator marks where one page ends and the next begins in the plain text. Choose the style that fits how you will use the text, for example pasting it into a document or feeding it to another tool.
If a PDF is made of flat scans with no text layer, there is nothing to extract and the result comes back empty. The tool does not read text out of images. Only PDFs with a real text layer give text.
What do I get?
A plain .txt file with the PDF's text.
Can I copy instead of downloading?
Yes. Copy the extracted text directly.
Why is my scanned PDF empty?
Scanned pages are images with no embedded text. Only PDFs with a real text layer extract.
